Beauty Mark: NYFW Fall 2010 - The Bold & The (Naturally) Beautiful

By: Nicole James

February 19th, 2010

New York saw a variety of looks at Fall 2010 Fashion Week, but not the variety I was hoping for.  For many designers, the theme seemed to be “all or nothing.”  Dark eyes and sassy hair were seen at Derek Lam, Alexander Wang, Carolina Herrera, and DVF while some kind of “non-look” showed up at 3.1 Phillip Lim, Marc Jacobs, Thakoon, and Narciso Rodriguez.

Overall I was a bit underwhelmed, but there were some standouts:

* Purple, purple, purple - seen most notably at Carolina Herrera.
* Vamp lips - Proenza Schouler and Derek Lam rocked ‘em.
* Huge headbands and red lips - Donna Karan is always classic.
* Long, straight hair - absolutely everywhere!
* Updos spotted at Vera Wang while Oscar De La Renta channelled the 80s.

My verdict:  Best Beauty goes to Michael Kors - he just understands women and what makes not only their bodies look good, but also their faces.  I’m giving Worst Beauty to Erin Wasson x RVCA: from what I understand, no gal wants to walk around with one janky eyebrow.

On The Runway: Back To Basics

When the weathers cold and I can't muster up the energy to get out of my cozy and warm bed, all I want to do is just want to press snooze. Then, I find myself scrambling to put together an outfit that slightly resembles something a half-sane person would wear, within the ten minute time frame that I created for myself.

By throwing together a multitude of black, white, and grays, I have in my closet, I found that I could put together a half-way decent outfit that looks pretty good, if I do say so myself. This year's Pre-Fall collections from designers such as Givenchy, Alexander Wang, and Jason Wu put together some of the great example of how black, white, and gray can be more interesting that color could ever be.

Straight out from dance class and looking as elegant as always...YEAH RIGHT. For most of us who can barely make it from our top floor apartments to the bottom stairs without breaking a sweat here’s a quick and simple outfit that emulates Charlotte Ronson’s Spring Ready-To-Wear dance inspired collection and for half the price.

Take this spring look and work it into you fall wardrobe by switching out rouched short tights with ankle or full length tights. Throw on a short bomber jacket over the outfit and your set for the streets.
