Who Doesn't Love T-shirts?

By: Kt McBratney

I have this propensity for stumbling upon distraction, but not all the timewasters I’ve found are worthy of sharing (sorry, puppy cam!). But with my undying love of T-shirts and the seemingly growing number of graphic designers in my circle, I have to spread the word for collarfree. I don’t know if I go so far as to say this line of Ts created by independent artists is a lifestyle, but it’s a great place for affordable basics with artsy punches. If browsing T-shirts online isn’t distracting enough for you, start voting. The collarfree concept is that independent graphic designers create and submit their original designs, which are then voted on by the “community” (read: anyone!). The winning designs are made into shirts that sell for $20-30, and the designer gets an uncapped royalty for each shirt sold.

Right now, there’s a promotion for 28 percent off in honor of cofounder Jimmy turning 28. Not only can you support fashionable comfort AND independent artists, you get to feel like your style opinion counts. And maybe sneak a few minutes away from working too!

Latest Obsession: Made Her Think Jewelry

By: Kt McBratney

November 14th, 2008

Allow me to share a growing obsession: Made Her Think. This jewelry line may not be Midwestern born nor raised, but unlike so many of my style obsessions, us Midwestern girls can easily access it and make it our own online. Brooklyn-based Meredith Kahn is the genius behind the lush, dark and edgily feminine bits and baubles of Made Her Think, drawing inspiration from the concept of joy in both life and death.

I spent an afternoon drooling over the Collection IX notebook (MHT’s variation of a lookbook), even printing it off to show my crew of designer friends. My favorites? The floating pyramid stud earrings in smoky quartz and double band chain ring in rose gold.

You can still check out and purchase from previous collections. The resin keepsake boxes are gorgeous and at a great price ($65). And for those lusting after MHT on a budget, there are two styles of skull rings on sale for $15 and $25 (this one comes in black, white and pink).

Maybe it’s my inner Goth or the recent upsurge of vampire media (True Blood and Twilight, anyone?), but Made Her Think is my perfect balance of delicate and dark, beautiful yet bold. Because when you sport a ring called the Talon Knuckle Buster, you got to know you’re making a statement.

Latest Obsession: Flannel

By: Monica Dimperio

flannel

Lately I've found myself totally and completely obsessed with flannel.

For example, when I saw the outfit on the left from Shopbop, I initially went, "Ewwww, gross" but clicked anyway to have a closer look at the tasteless sight. After just a minute I became completely intrigued, so much so, that I thought, "Hmm, maybe I should buy that".

I can't really explain it.

One possibility that I came up with is that the entire look is based on comfort items that I own or have owned.

1. The Flannel: Flannels are to my 90's wardrobe as white buttons are to my current wardrobe. I wore the things like they were classic. After junior high, needless to say, I  traded them for a more refined wardrobe, but I never forgot the fun, carefree times that came with those unflattering lumberjack shirts.

2. Stirrup Stretch Pants: 11 years of my life were spent in stretch pants and god help me but I would love to spend 11 more in them.

3. Cowboy Boots: I have big feet and the one pair of shoes I own that fit me are my ultra-expensive, ultra-authentic cowboy boots. I never wear them anymore but I'm thinking tis' the season.

So, I guess there are a few valid reasons for liking that weird Shopbop outfit I love/hate. Quite honestly, I'm not going to buy the outfit but I'll almost definitely wear something similar and feel okay about it(now that I talked it out and all).

Latest Obsession: Granny Boots

By: Monica Dimperio

grannyboots

During Fashion Week I photographed a girl wearing a black ensemble complete with a vintage Fendi clutch and a pair of brown granny boots. For those of you that don't know, granny boots (sometimes referred to as pixie boots) are flat, lace up boots that come to the ankle and usually have  a pointed toe. After looking though my photos, hers became one of my favorites of the trip and so ensued my obsession.

At first, I thought she was just a stylish girl but upon closer inspection I noticed the little details. The way she cleverly mixed black and brown, was one that stuck out, but it really came down her ankle boots. You have to understand, coming from the Midwest, I'm accustomed to mainly seeing black, knee high Steve Maddens, so these were a bit of a culture shock.

Since I am a collector of all things fashion related, as you can probably tell from previous posts(boots being NO exception), the crazy fashion bitch inside me told me I HAD to have a pair. So, two days after I got home, I marched my ass to the thrift store to hunt them down. Miraculously, I found some. They are cute, brown and were only $3!

After my purchase I did a little research and found out that Urban Outfitters has a handful of the boots in various styles for sale. So if your just as obsessed as I am, try your luck at the thrift or just pay $125 more and get them brand spankin' new.

Trendspotting: Onesies

By: Monica Dimperio

September 26th, 2008

Throughout the streets of Europe The Facehunter has spotted several women wearing the atrocious 90's onesie, and somehow, they all manage to look ever so stylish, which can only mean one thing for us. By this time next year people in the states will be sporting the same look like it's no one's business.

Personally, I love them. No muss, no fuss. Just wake up in the morning and put your jumpsuit on. But, realistically, they are pretty heinous and as fashion followers we should know these just ain't right.

I've picked up a quite a few at the thrift store, only to put them back up on the rack. Right now, I just can't do it but I can't say it isn't a possibility in the future.
