No More Mayle

August 18th, 2008

First Jovovich-Hawk, now Mayle. With the economy in a downward spiral, many smaller fashion labels are feeling the crunch. Sadly, WWD reported today that Jane Mayle’s holiday-resort collection would be her last and the boutique she operates in New York is closing in February when her lease runs up.

But Mayle says it wasn’t the economy that made her decide to close up shop after 10 years. To her, it was the “out of whack delivery cycles” and pressure by increased media attention.

“It seems like a commercial cul-de-sac in a way that the customer gets tired before the collections even hit stores,” Mayle said. “How I came to this business was all about dreaming and building a wardrobe you would be seduced by. That mystery and remoteness and insouciance have disappeared from fashion in order to accelerate the product. I feel I have just become another cog in that machinery.”

It’s not all bad news though, Mayle is quick to say she isn’t totally getting out of the business.

“What I learned from having this business, I could apply anywhere,” she said. “It could be interiors, graphics, scents — anything evoking an atmosphere. That’s where I’d like to situate myself.”
